Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu has urged victims of the Nigerian military’s accidental bombing on December 25 to accept the tragedy as part of their fate. The airstrike, which hit the villages of Rumtuwa and Gidan Sama in the Silame local government area, resulted in the deaths of 10 people and injuries to six others. The bombing was described as an unfortunate mistake during military efforts to protect the community.
In addition to the human casualties, approximately 100 animals, including camels, cows, and donkeys, were killed in the attack. Governor Aliyu, who attended the victims’ burial, reassured the community that the bombing was unintentional.
He told the gathered people, “As Muslims, it’s good for us to accept destiny, whether it’s good or bad.” He emphasized that the bombing was part of the community’s fate, following a series of similar incidents in the area.
Governor Aliyu pledged to collaborate with the relevant authorities for a thorough investigation into the incident and to take steps to prevent future attacks. He also provided aid to the affected community, including 100 bags of food and approximately 20 million naira.
Local government chairman Abubakar Muhammad confirmed that both air and ground forces were involved in the attack. He described the bombing as a “relentless attack” that continued until the state government intervened. The villages are located near the Surame desert, an area associated with the Lakurawa militant group, which is believed to have been a target of the military operation.
