Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has inaugurated the state’s Hisbah Board, urging its members to operate within the confines of the law and respect citizens’ rights. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Thursday, the governor stressed that the board must not misuse its authority to harass or persecute innocent individuals.
Governor Aliyu outlined the board’s primary role as promoting moral and religious values in Sokoto, a predominantly Muslim community, while combating social vices. He emphasized that although the Hisbah Board is legally empowered to make arrests, it is not a replacement for state police and should collaborate closely with security agencies in handling cases.
“We are committed to addressing societal issues and fostering an environment of justice and welfare,” the governor stated. He further assured the public of the state’s support for the board, which has been equipped with necessary resources, including office facilities and operational vehicles.
“There is a law guiding their operations, and individuals of integrity have been carefully selected to lead the board. We will monitor their activities to ensure they remain focused on their responsibilities,” he added.
Sultan of Sokoto Advocates for Operational Independence
Representing the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, the Wazirin Sokoto, Professor Sambo Junaidu, highlighted the importance of granting the Hisbah Board operational autonomy. “This independence is crucial for effectively addressing social vices and achieving their objectives,” he said.
Commendations and Expectations for Hisbah Members
Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, the Commander of Kano State’s Hisbah Commission and a respected Islamic scholar, praised Governor Aliyu’s leadership and vision. He also outlined the essential qualities expected from Hisbah personnel, including patience, wisdom, and a strong foundation in religious knowledge, to ensure their work aligns with both legal and ethical standards.
The Hisbah Board, established as part of efforts to strengthen moral governance in Sokoto, will operate under strict supervision to ensure its mandate is achieved without infringing on the rights of the public.
