The mother of Nigerian rapper Speed Darlington Okoye is appealing on social media for the release of her son, who is currently in police custody after being allegedly taken from his home by Burna Boy’s associates.

Queen Theresa shared her distressing experience, explaining that Speed Darlington’s gatekeeper informed the family that some individuals had taken him following the release of a viral video featuring him.

She is urging Nigerians to help plead for her son’s release. “I just received news that my son, Speed Darlington, is missing. His gatekeeper called our family and said there was a video Speed Darlington made about Burna Boy,” she said.

For several days, there has been widespread concern on social media regarding Speed Darlington’s whereabouts.

Human rights lawyer Deyi Adeyanju confirmed on X that Speed Darlington is indeed in police custody. He stated that they have located him and are working to secure his release.

“We are involved in the Speed Darlington situation and will do everything we can to free him. We urge the authorities to cease their crackdown on freedom of speech in Nigeria,” he added. “One cannot sing against oppression and still be an oppressor.”

Adeyanju emphasized the need to address attacks on freedom of expression in the country, noting that they have identified Speed Darlington and are actively seeking to secure his freedom.

A viral video has been circulating, showing Speed Darlington questioning Burna Boy about how he won his Grammy award in 2021. The 39-year-old, known as “Akpi,” asked Burna Boy if Diddy had any influence on his win.

“Shortly after Burna Boy posted a picture with Diddy and won the Grammy, I wondered—Burna Boy, can you tell me how much oil Diddy used on you before you received that trophy?” he said.

Videos of his arrest have also been trending online, following a group that accompanied him as he left his residence.

As for the individuals responsible for his arrest, they have yet to comment publicly. Burna Boy, whose name has come up in relation to the incident, has also not made any statements.
