Tottenham Hotspur stormed to a 4-1 victory over West Ham on Saturday, overturning a level first half by scoring three goals in an explosive eight-minute spell in the second half. The emphatic win helped erase memories of their recent collapse against Brighton.
Mohammed Kudus had put West Ham ahead with a goal against the run of play, but Dejan Kulusevski equalized for Spurs before half-time. The game took a dramatic turn early in the second half when Tottenham struck three times in quick succession. Yves Bissouma, an own goal by West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, and a fourth goal from Son Heung-min sealed the win.
This was Tottenham’s third victory in four Premier League matches, lifting them to sixth in the standings, while West Ham’s new coach, Julen Lopetegui, faces mounting pressure after another disappointing result.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou was delighted with his team’s performance, especially after their recent 3-2 loss to Brighton, where they had squandered a 2-0 lead. “The second half was outstanding,” said Postecoglou. “Good energy, good goals, good football.”
Dominant Spurs
Spurs were in control for much of the first half, but West Ham caused problems with Jarrod Bowen’s dangerous runs down the right. Kudus opened the scoring in the 18th minute after Bowen’s deflected shot fell into his path. However, Tottenham responded quickly. Kulusevski found the net in the 36th minute, with his shot bouncing off both posts before crossing the line.
Tottenham continued their dominance in the second half. Postecoglou’s decision to replace James Maddison with Pape Sarr paid off, as Bissouma slotted home the go-ahead goal in the 52nd minute following a calm cut-back from Destiny Udogie. Just three minutes later, Son’s cross forced an own goal from Areola, making it 3-1.
Son added a fourth goal for Spurs on the hour mark, beating West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo before firing past Areola. The South Korean international, returning from a hamstring injury, nearly added another goal moments later but hit the post.
West Ham’s day went from bad to worse when Kudus was sent off in the dying minutes following a VAR review, leaving them with just two wins from eight league matches this season.
