Femi Martins, Chairman of the Paramo International Trade Center Board, has called on stakeholders to maintain peace and unity at the Ladipo market in Mushin Local Government Area, Lagos State.
Speaking during a stakeholder engagement on Thursday, Martins explained that the board was established following a bylaw enacted by the legislative arm of Mushin Local Government. The engagement was initiated by the council’s Executive Chairman, Emmanuel Bamgboye, to address lingering issues in the market.
Highlighting the board’s mandate, Martins stated that its primary goal is to resolve conflicts, including those stemming from a recent clash caused by a disputed election.
He said, “We are here at the directive of the Executive Chairman of Mushin Local Government, Emmanuel Bamgboye. On November 22, 2024, the local government’s legislative arm passed several bylaws, one of which established market boards across all markets in the area. Following this, the Paramo International Trade Center board was inaugurated on November 25, 2024.
“Our mandate is clear: to resolve existing disputes and foster peace and unity. Today, we begin the process of establishing lasting peace in the market. We appeal to everyone to put aside bitterness and address grievances constructively to ensure harmony and tranquillity.”
During the meeting, a market stakeholder, Emmanuel Nbamara, condemned the violence linked to the recent election and emphasized the importance of free and fair processes in the market’s governance.
Reflecting on the market’s history, Fausat Olajoku, wife of the late Hassan Olajoku after whom the market is named, recalled its structured beginnings, which included an advisory committee that worked to maintain peace.
The engagement brought together stakeholders from the three major tribes represented in the market. It was adjourned to December 12, 2024, with Martins urging all parties to uphold peace, law, and order in the interim.
