The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that work is underway to restore power following a partial collapse of the national grid, which occurred at about 1:52 p.m. on Tuesday. In an update on its official X account, the National Grid stated, “National Grid suffers another setback. Restoration soon!”
According to TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the partial system disruption resulted from multiple line and generator trippings, which led to instability across the grid. However, TCN emphasized that the entire grid was not affected, and some areas were able to maintain power, as indicated by data from the National Control Centre (NCC).
TCN engineers are working to restore bulk electricity to impacted regions, prioritizing swift repairs to reduce the impact on consumers. Mbah confirmed that power has already been restored to Abuja as of 2:49 p.m., with restoration efforts gradually reaching other areas.
Expressing regret for the disruption, TCN reassured customers that updates would follow as the restoration progresses. TCN stated, “The national grid experienced a partial disturbance at about 1:52 p.m. due to a series of line and generator trippings causing grid instability. A portion of the grid remained unaffected.”
This incident marks the ninth grid disturbance of 2024, following three collapses in late October. The year’s first major blackout occurred on February 4, when capacity dropped sharply, resulting in a nationwide outage by midday.
