The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has dismissed reports of a national grid collapse on Saturday, describing such claims as inaccurate.
In a statement issued from Abuja, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, provided clarification regarding the power outage.
According to Ms. Mbah, the disruption began around 1:41 p.m. on Saturday when the Osogbo-Ihovour transmission line tripped, followed by the Benin-Omotosho line. She explained that these issues impacted the bulk power supply to the Lagos region only.
Ms. Mbah also highlighted that before the tripping incident, total grid generation was 4,335.63 Megawatts (MW), which dropped to 2,573.23 MW after the lines were affected. She emphasized that this decline did not equate to a grid collapse.
“The tripping of the transmission lines caused disruptions to power supply from Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras,” she added.
All systems have since been restored, except for the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line, which is still undergoing repairs.
Ms. Mbah reiterated TCN’s ongoing efforts to enhance the transmission grid despite the challenges and urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation, stressing the need for accurate and verified information.
