The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has revealed that the government spent approximately N8.8 billion to repair 128 vandalized power transmission towers across the country between January and November 2024.
This disclosure was made during a quarterly power sector meeting in Abuja by TCN’s Managing Director, Sule Abdulaziz, who was represented by Olugbenga Ajiboye, Executive Director of Transmission Service Provider. Ajiboye noted that the destruction of these towers by vandals and bandits has significantly impacted the nation’s power infrastructure.
According to Ajiboye, “As of today, 128 towers have been damaged by either vandals or bandits. To restore them to full functionality, about N8.8 billion has been spent. Unfortunately, even when these vandals are apprehended and handed over to law enforcement, they are often charged with theft rather than vandalism and released on bail.”
The rise in tower vandalism has compounded the challenges faced by Nigeria’s national grid, resulting in frequent disruptions in electricity supply.
Earlier in November, TCN reported an incident where the 330kV Lokoja-Gwagwalada transmission line was damaged by vandals, disrupting bulk electricity transmission. The attack, which occurred in the early hours of November 9, severely affected power supply along this critical route.
Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager for Public Affairs, explained that attempts to re-energize the line initially failed due to an unexpected trip. A patrol team later discovered that three towers—T306, T307, and T308—had been vandalized, with significant portions of aluminum conductors stolen.
Efforts are ongoing to repair the damages and reinforce security measures to prevent further occurrences, according to TCN.
