Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), has called on local government chairmen to prioritize investments in tertiary education. Echono made this appeal on Thursday after receiving an award of excellence during the Association of Chairmen of Local Government Service Commissions’ annual summit, which focused on addressing security and other contemporary challenges at the local level.
Expressing gratitude for the award, Echono acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to restore autonomy to local governments, emphasizing that this newfound autonomy should translate into increased support for tertiary education.
He stated, “With the President’s courageous step to restore local government autonomy, we expect more resources to flow to that sector. We encourage them to invest in tertiary education, and TETFund will be there to provide support.”
Echono further highlighted the importance of collaboration between local, state, and federal governments in ensuring the advancement of Nigeria’s educational sector.
In his remarks, Kamal Bayewu, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commissions, praised Echono for his commitment to improving tertiary education, expressing hope that the recognition would motivate him to achieve even greater success.
