Striker Romelu Lukaku has addressed the ongoing comparisons that have shadowed his career, particularly during his time in English football, where he has often been likened to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.
In an interview with Friends of Sports released on Wednesday via YouTube, Lukaku shared his perspective on these comparisons. “In England, they wanted to put me in a box. They see someone built like me and think: new Drogba,” he stated, emphasizing that such comparisons were misplaced.
Lukaku, who has played for several top Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United, and Everton, highlighted that while his physical stature is a notable aspect of his game, his playing style is markedly different from that of Drogba. “I’m not like that. Didier was more back to goal; he could hold up the ball no matter where you play it in from. That wasn’t my style,” he explained.
The Belgian forward underscored the challenges that come with being constantly compared to Drogba, whose unique style and skill set seemed to dictate how many expected him to perform on the pitch. “It’s tough to meet those expectations,” Lukaku added, reinforcing his desire to be recognized for his own distinct contributions to the game rather than as a mere replica of another player.
