President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Aisha Garba, an international development expert, as the new Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
The announcement was made on Tuesday through a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who described Garba as a highly experienced education specialist with a strong track record spanning over 24 years.
According to the statement, Garba has led the design and implementation of impactful education programs in Nigeria and internationally. “With over 15 years of direct experience at the World Bank, Garba has spearheaded the full cycle of education programme reforms—from conceptualisation to implementation and impact assessment,” it added.
Garba holds a degree in English and Computer Studies from Petra American University, Jordan, earned in 2000. She later pursued a Master’s degree in International Development at the University of Birmingham, UK, graduating in 2007.
Her extensive career includes consulting roles with global organizations such as the World Bank, the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), BOND-UK, Regent Foundation, and Muslim Aid Organization.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that Garba’s expertise will advance his administration’s goal of providing quality basic education and ensuring Nigerian children gain the skills needed to compete globally.
The statement concluded: “With her extensive experience and proven success in education and human development, the President expects Aisha Garba to lead UBEC in implementing sustainable solutions that will enhance access to quality education for Nigerian children.”
