President Bola Tinubu has called on African military forces to strengthen their cooperation in addressing the growing security threats and challenges to the continent’s peace and stability. His remarks came on Wednesday, as Vice President Kashim Shettima represented him at the opening ceremony of the second edition of the Africa Military Games (AMGA) in Abuja.
Tinubu described the event as a historic moment to promote military collaboration and unity across Africa, emphasizing the need for collective action. “It is time for African militaries to come together, not only to pursue peace but also to protect the sovereignty of our nations and the unity of our continent,” he said.
The Games, which have been revived after more than two decades, aim to foster solidarity through sports among the armed forces of African countries. The event, with the theme “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports,” traces its origins to Nairobi, Kenya, where the first edition was held over 20 years ago.
During the opening ceremony at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Vice President Shettima, representing President Tinubu, underscored the importance of collective security. He noted that no nation can tackle its security challenges alone, stressing the need for a united African response to ensure the safety and well-being of the continent’s people.
A statement from Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, further emphasized the significance of the gathering. “This event is more than just a meeting of athletes; it is a powerful reminder of the essential cooperation between military forces across Africa,” the statement read. “When we stand together, we reaffirm our commitment to securing a continent that relies on your bravery, sacrifices, and unwavering dedication.”
President Tinubu also praised the leadership of General C.G. Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, and Major General M. Abdullahi, President of the Organization of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), for their role in reviving the Games.
The President highlighted the role of sports in fostering physical fitness, discipline, and resilience among military personnel—key qualities needed to tackle Africa’s security challenges. “Sports not only maintain our physical fitness but also instill values such as integrity, excellence, and discipline,” he remarked. “When our military personnel are fit, they are better prepared to meet the challenges of their duties with strength and confidence.”
Finally, Tinubu stressed that addressing Africa’s security issues requires more than military force. “The security challenges we face cannot be solved by force alone. We must strengthen the partnerships and friendships that have always existed between us,” he stated. “As long as any nation in our shared region is under threat, none of us can claim that the continent is secure. Together, we will build a safer, stronger Africa.”
