On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other high-ranking officials attended the Independence Day Parade at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, marking Nigeria’s 64th anniversary of independence.

In their respective states, several governors also held parades or made broadcasts calling for peace, unity, and patriotism to foster national development.

Tinubu, arriving at around 10:10 am with First Lady Oluremi, took his place for the national anthem before reviewing the Guard of Honour led by Lt. Col. Moshood Yusuf. Following this, he observed military drills, a vibrant parade, and the symbolic changing of the presidential guards.

The day’s events included a combined Armed Forces colour patrol, showcasing the national and regimental flags of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. There was also a silent drill by the guards’ platoon and cultural performances from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. These activities emphasized the nation’s cultural richness and diversity, symbolized by a collaborative effort to raise a large talking drum, termed the ‘national treasure.’

Tinubu concluded the ceremony by signing the anniversary register, releasing white doves, and cutting the anniversary cake. This marked his second Independence Day as President. Unlike past ceremonies held at Eagle Square, this year’s event took place within the Villa, a decision attributed to economic constraints as announced by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, in October 2023.

Dignitaries present included Vice President’s wife Nana Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and other top government officials.

Nationwide Addresses Stress Unity

Several governors also marked the day with messages emphasizing the need for unity. Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele spoke on the importance of collective efforts to ensure the country’s progress, while acknowledging the economic challenges faced by the nation. He highlighted the President’s commitment to addressing these issues through socio-economic policies and urged Nigerians to stay resilient.

In Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa called on citizens to embrace values that promote honor, national pride, and patriotism. As the state gears up for its governorship elections, he urged peaceful conduct.

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, praising the nation’s resilience and determination to overcome various challenges. He reaffirmed his commitment to democracy and urged citizens to hold steadfast to hope.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State reiterated his focus on security and economic recovery, extending a subsidy program on public transport to mitigate the impact of economic hardships. He also emphasized unity and resilience, encouraging citizens to reflect on ways to improve the nation’s future.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, speaking at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, reflected on Nigeria’s journey since gaining independence in 1960, calling for collaboration and inclusivity to build a better future.

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed assured residents of the government’s continued focus on security, while praising the resilience of Nigerians amidst economic difficulties. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing relief through ongoing palliative measures.

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf urged citizens to remember the sacrifices of the nation’s forefathers and called for intensified efforts to uplift the state’s socio-economic development.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun called for collective action to address the country’s socio-economic challenges, expressing confidence that Nigeria’s current trials could be overcome through unity and hard work.

Governors Usman Ododo (Kogi), Bassey Otu (Cross River), and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara) also addressed their respective states, encouraging citizens to focus on national unity, support ongoing reforms, and work together for a prosperous future.

Several other leaders, including lawmakers and political groups, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of patriotism, unity, and collective efforts to move Nigeria forward.
