The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed the death of several top bandit commanders in a series of airstrikes conducted in Zamfara State.
In a statement released on Sunday, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, revealed that the airstrikes, carried out in collaboration with ground forces, also left numerous bandits injured.
While Akinboyewa did not provide an exact number of casualties, he stated that intelligence reports confirmed heavy losses for the bandits loyal to the notorious Kachallah Bello Turji.
Despite the successful strikes, Akinboyewa mentioned that the whereabouts of the infamous bandit leader, Kachallah Turji, remain unclear.
“Multiple bandits were neutralized during the operation, and several others, including top commanders, sustained various degrees of injury,” Akinboyewa said. “However, Turji’s location remains unknown, which is adding further strain to his collapsing network.”
Describing the operation as a well-coordinated air-ground assault, Akinboyewa emphasized that it showcased the military’s determination to restore peace to the region.
The operation was carried out with real-time coordination from an Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform, ensuring accurate targeting.
Bandits were seen fleeing eastward across a hill, prompting further engagements that successfully neutralized additional targets.
“The targets were swiftly engaged with rockets and cannons in multiple passes, delivering devastating strikes to the enemy,” Akinboyewa explained. “The aircrew maintained close visual and radio contact with the ground troops.”
The operation has been hailed as a success, with local residents in Zamfara State expressing relief and gratitude. Several kidnapped victims were freed, bringing hope to families affected by the banditry.
“The Nigerian Air Force remains committed to working with ground forces to eliminate criminal elements across the nation,” Akinboyewa added. “We will continue to protect the security of our territories and the well-being of our citizens, ensuring a peaceful and prosperous future for Nigeria.”
