A pedestrian lost their life on Tuesday in the Iyana Ishashi area of Lagos after being struck by a truck that reportedly suffered brake failure.
According to information provided by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident occurred when the truck, attempting a U-turn toward Mile 2, went out of control. The vehicle swerved off the road and fatally hit the pedestrian.
LASTMA spokesperson Taofiq Adebayo revealed that excessive speed contributed to the severity of the collision, emphasizing that the driver’s inability to control the truck exacerbated the situation.
Adebayo stated, “A fully loaded Howo tipper without registration details suffered a brake failure during a high-speed maneuver, leading to this unfortunate incident. The truck veered off course and struck a pedestrian, resulting in an immediate fatality.”
In response to the tragedy, LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the victim’s family. Through the agency’s spokesperson, he urged motorists to prioritize vehicle maintenance and adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent similar occurrences.
Bakare-Oki added, “This incident highlights the importance of road safety and regular vehicle checks. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family and remain committed to improving traffic management and reducing accidents across Lagos State.”
This follows a series of accidents reported on Monday, where two lives were lost and several others injured in separate incidents along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Third Mainland Bridge, and Fadeyi areas of Lagos and Ogun states.
