The Trump administration later announced the suspension of all military aid to Ukraine, which has been battling a Russian invasion for the past three years.
On Tuesday, former US President Donald Trump stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had informed him of Kyiv’s willingness to engage in negotiations with Russia and finalize a US minerals agreement, just days after a tense exchange at the White House.
“I received an important letter from President Zelensky of Ukraine,” Trump said while addressing Congress. “The letter states, ‘Ukraine is prepared to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. No one desires peace more than the Ukrainian people.’”
He continued, quoting Zelensky: “‘My team and I are ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to secure a lasting peace. We deeply appreciate America’s efforts in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence.’”
Earlier on Tuesday, Zelensky expressed his intention to “make things right” with Trump following their heated confrontation on Friday.
During a White House meeting, Vice President JD Vance accused Zelensky of showing a lack of gratitude for US assistance, while Trump criticized the Ukrainian leader for lacking strategic leverage. Zelensky departed without signing a proposed deal that would grant the US control over Ukraine’s mineral resources.
Following this, the Trump administration declared a freeze on all military aid to Ukraine.
Speaking to lawmakers—many of whom wore US and Ukrainian flag pins—Trump stated, “Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is prepared to sign it at a time convenient for us.”
He further noted, “I appreciate the letter from President Zelensky. It arrived just a short while ago.”
Trump also revealed that discussions with Russia had taken place, suggesting Moscow was signaling a readiness for peace.
“Wouldn’t that be beautiful?” he remarked.
