A surprising last-minute Iowa poll showing Kamala Harris leading Donald Trump appears to have unsettled the former president, who was initially expected to win the conservative Hawkeye State.

The GOP nominee reacted to the new polling numbers, released Saturday, by accusing Ann Selzer, the well-respected pollster behind the report, of being biased. “No President has done more for FARMERS, and the Great State of Iowa, than Donald J. Trump. In fact, it’s not even close!” Trump posted on Truth Social Sunday. “All polls, except for one heavily skewed toward the Democrats by a Trump hater who got it wrong the last time, have me up, BY A LOT. I LOVE THE FARMERS, AND THEY LOVE ME.”

The respected Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll put Harris ahead of Trump at 47% to 44%, sparking Trump’s public criticism. His campaign also dismissed the Des Moines Register poll as “a bluff,” pointing instead to an Emerson College poll published the same day showing Trump leading by 10 points.

Senior Trump advisor Jason Miller reportedly described the Selzer poll as “idiotic,” while Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk labeled the data “fake” and “a media tactic to suppress turnout.”

Selzer responded to these criticisms, saying to Newsweek: “Comments like this are typical for any poll, including mine. The Des Moines Register publishes a full methodology statement, the same we used to show Trump winning Iowa in 2016 and 2020. It’s not in my interest or that of my clients—The Des Moines Register and Mediacom—to fabricate numbers.”

In the 2016 and 2020 elections, Trump won Iowa by 9 and 8 points, respectively. However, this poll has led to a drop in his election betting odds. If Harris were to secure a win in Iowa, she would be the first Democratic nominee to turn the state blue since 2012.
