An explosion at the busy Orlu International Market in Imo State led to the death of two individuals and left several others injured on Tuesday, sparking widespread fear and panic as people scrambled for safety.
The blast occurred during peak hours, causing a chaotic scene as market-goers rushed to escape, which resulted in additional injuries. Witnesses reported that the explosion disrupted normal activities, with people fleeing in all directions.
The Imo State Police Command confirmed the incident, with spokesperson Henry Okoye stating that two of those killed were involved in handling an explosive device. Conflicting accounts regarding the nature of the explosion have emerged, with some speculating on whether it was indeed a bomb.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, Okoye noted, “The explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED),” adding that Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma had sent anti-bomb units to the scene.
Okoye explained, “The two individuals, who appeared to be responsible for setting up the IED, were killed during its detonation. Our officers are now on the ground, and the public is advised to remain calm and vigilant, reporting any suspicious activity.”
This incident has heightened concerns over security in the area, and authorities are expected to investigate thoroughly to prevent similar occurrences.
