A violent encounter at Izuchukwu Junction, Nnobi-Nnewi Road, Anambra State, on Wednesday evening left two people feared dead and several others injured. The incident, which occurred around 7 pm, involved a clash between police operatives and local security forces, sparking a gunfight that lasted for several minutes.
Eyewitnesses reported that a vehicle caught fire after its fuel tank was struck by bullets during the exchange.
Contrary to initial speculations of an attack by non-state actors or “unknown gunmen,” the Anambra State Police Command clarified the situation. According to the state police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the gunfire was a result of a misunderstanding between the police and local security forces.
“The attackers were not non-state actors. Preliminary investigations reveal that local security personnel mistakenly identified police operatives as hostile forces,” Ikenga stated.
The altercation reportedly began when police operatives, who were pursuing a suspect, approached a security checkpoint, leading to the exchange of fire.
“Sadly, the Toyota Venza Sedan carrying the men was hit, causing it to catch fire. Two innocent bystanders were injured and are currently receiving medical attention,” Ikenga added.
The police have urged calm while investigations continue and emphasized that the incident was not related to the burial of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, which was ongoing in the area. To ensure security throughout the burial proceedings, joint security forces have been deployed to maintain peace in Nnewi and its environs.
