No fewer than 10,789 students of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) have accessed the Nigerian Education Fund (NELfund) loan, according to the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Egbewole.
Prof. Egbewole expressed optimism that this figure could double by the end of the current academic session.
Speaking in Ilorin, Kwara State, during activities marking the university’s 50th anniversary, the jurisprudence law professor revealed, “As of now, we have verified that 10,789 students have benefited from the NELfund loan. We are optimistic that after the verification for the 2024/2025 session, this number will double.”
On the subject of proposed tax reforms, Prof. Egbewole remarked, “As a lawyer, I understand that a reform aims to improve the existing framework. This is what the government intends with the tax reforms bill. However, the bill remains under review by the National Assembly, and any conclusions are speculative at this stage. The political class is addressing the reactions, but it’s not my place to comment further.”
Addressing rumors regarding the potential scrapping of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Prof. Egbewole clarified, “As a lawyer, I focus on facts and figures. While ASUU may have its stance on TETFund, the government has not officially announced plans to scrap it.”
