Tributes have flooded in from Manchester United players, past and present, to honor Kath Phipps, a beloved long-time staff member who passed away at the age of 85.
Described as a cornerstone of the club since the late 1960s, Phipps worked in multiple roles over an incredible 55-year career. Manchester United called her “an omnipresent figure” whose dedication left an indelible mark on the organization.
Former club legend and all-time top scorer Wayne Rooney, now managing Plymouth in the Championship, shared heartfelt words: “The heart and soul of Manchester United. Everything the club stands for. A legend who will be deeply missed. Thanks for the memories, Kathy. Thoughts are with her family and friends.”
Current players also expressed their sorrow. Club captain Bruno Fernandes responded with a simple heart emoji, while Marcus Rashford described her as “admired by all at the club and beyond,” adding, “You will be missed.”
Former United goalkeeper David de Gea remembered her fondly, saying: “Such a wonderful woman! Thanks for taking care of everyone.” Harry Maguire, the team’s defender, echoed the sentiment, calling her “a legend that will never be forgotten.”
The club released a touching statement recounting Phipps’ remarkable journey. Starting as a switchboard operator in 1968, shortly after United’s historic European Cup win, Phipps formed close bonds with legendary figures like Sir Matt Busby, Jimmy Murphy, and Ballon d’Or winners George Best, Bobby Charlton, and Denis Law. Her work often extended beyond her duties, spending hours ensuring players could connect with fans through signed memorabilia.
“Kath was a one-woman institution, whose memory will be cherished by everyone at the club who had the privilege of knowing her,” the statement read. Quoting her words from last year, it concluded, “‘I can’t imagine doing anything else.’ Well, we can’t imagine the place without her.”
Kath Phipps’ passing leaves a void at Manchester United, but her legacy as a beloved staff member and friend to generations of players will live on.
