The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that individuals apprehended by security agencies for allegedly stealing sewage manhole covers from highways in Abuja will face the full force of the law. Wike emphasized that this move aims to deter others from engaging in such acts of vandalism.
The Minister further assured that buyers and users of stolen manhole covers and other vandalized public infrastructure would be identified and prosecuted for economic sabotage and endangering the lives of Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Monday by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the Minister, it was revealed that over 50 suspects had been arrested for theft and vandalism of manhole covers within the FCT. Additionally, 25 stolen manhole covers have been recovered, underscoring the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s (FCTA) zero tolerance for criminal activities, especially the destruction of public infrastructure.
Wike commended the security agencies for their swift and coordinated efforts, describing their actions as “fantastic” and reassuring FCT residents of the government’s commitment to securing lives and properties.
The Minister also lauded Nigerians for their patriotism in condemning acts of vandalism. He urged citizens to remain proactive in safeguarding public infrastructure, noting, “Protecting public amenities is primarily the responsibility of Nigerians, as they are both the owners and beneficiaries.”
Wike encouraged FCT residents to continue using social media positively, as demonstrated during the public outcry over the stolen manhole covers. He promised that the government would act promptly to address such issues.
He added, “Those involved in stealing or buying public infrastructure are Nigerians living among us. They are known to their communities. Patriotic Nigerians must expose these individuals before they carry out their harmful acts.”
