Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State, pleaded not guilty on Friday to 18 charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The charges, which include money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of public funds, involve an estimated N80.2 billion. After the charges were read to him, Bello responded firmly, denying all the allegations.
At the hearing, EFCC counsel Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, informed Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja that the prosecution intended to withdraw a previously filed application to shorten the date set for the arraignment. The counsel explained that the request had become unnecessary due to recent developments.
The defense, represented by Joseph Daudu, SAN, did not object to the withdrawal, and Justice Nwite granted the request.
Further updates are expected as the case progresses.
