The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has banned the use of firecrackers, commonly known as knockouts, ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, emphasized that the prohibition is to safeguard lives and property during the festive season.
“This ban is implemented to ensure the safety of all residents and to protect lives and property throughout the festive season,” Disu stated.
He noted that firecrackers often cause unnecessary panic, pose fire hazards, and can lead to avoidable accidents. He further warned that anyone found using or selling firecrackers would face arrest and prosecution.
The police urged community leaders and residents to help spread awareness about the dangers associated with firecrackers and the importance of complying with the directive. Residents were also encouraged to report any suspicious activities or violations of the ban through the command’s emergency hotlines.
Disu assured the public that the police remain committed to ensuring peace, safety, and order throughout the holiday season.
